Shoutcast

Last updated: Oct. 26, 2005, 10:08 p.m.

It's a silly time in the morning but my first lecture isn't until 11.15 tomorrow so it doesn't really matter. This is the first of many rants, I could have called this a Blog but it just didn't seem fitting because it isn't so much a log as me moaning or waxing-lyrical about something!

This isn't a complaint, far from it! Today I will tell you of the wonder that is Shoutcast. It is a technology invented by Nullsoft (of Winamp fame). Basically it is a method for transmitting a stream of mp3 data over the internet, think of it as a huge mp3 file that you can start playing before you've finished downloading it, and that your computer doesn't store for long. The technology means that one "radio station" somewhere in the world can broadcast to the entire planet without all this irritating nonsense of radio licensing. It's really easy to listen to a station, go to www.shoutcast.com and pick one you like the look of and click the link and you should have a player that can cope with it. I personally very much like Stargate Radio, classic rock from the 60s 70s and 80s, but whatever your taste you should be able to find something, and it sure beats listening to that same old music collection again and again!
