Major re-write

Last updated: May 29, 2007, 1:04 p.m.

You may notice looking at the site that it looks slightly different, actually it's totally different, it just happens that it appears to resemble the old site. Over the last 4 days I have written the entire site as you see it now from scratch, over 2000 lines of code. Plus migrating all the old content to the new database structure.

It's been quite a challenge to code this much stuff in just a few days. Admittedly I had the site layout pre-planned and the database structures developed and tested but I have never written so much PHP from scratch before.

Anyway, it all seems to be working now even in Internet Explorer which caused all sorts of problems, and there isn't a table in sight web design purists will be glad to here. You will certainly get a better experience if you use a more CSS compliant browser, e.g. Firefox, but the content should be readable in all browsers.

Highlights of the new version of the site include the range of news feeds for you to pick from, the site index, and most importantly the unified search tool. There's a search box on every page now, and typing one or more keywords into this will search all of the posts I've made, along with all the photos on the site and give you a list of all items tagged with that keyword.

Because this re-write has changed the structure of the site considerably, chances are if you got here from Google or another search engine, you won't find what you were looking for, so try a search for it, pretty much all the stuff from the old site is here still.

A notable exception is source code which I haven't got around to uploading yet, that will come with time. For now enjoy the new, cleaner multi-column appearance, and look forward to some more content soon.
